Men's classic tailoring sets the mood for androgynous styling on the autumn/ winter 2011/12 catwalks. The androgynous trend offers real versatility across market levels working for both careerwear and trend-led apparel from juniors right the way through to older consumers.

Chanel was one of many fashion houses which served up menswear-inspired tailoring for women, with a heightened emphasis on authenticity. Sharply tailored blazers were paired with shirts, sweaters and trousers at Paul Smith and Margaret Howell.

British mid-market retailers offer neat single-breasted blazers and tapered trousers in classic suiting fabrics. Colours are predominantly masculine with stark black, charcoal grey and beige being key, while injections of rich autumnal colours, such as ruby red and ochre brighten up shop floors.

Cropped trouser lengths and slim silhouettes adapt masculine suiting for a feminine market, while contrasting lapels and jet pockets add trend-driven detailing. Key styling directions see blazers worn over buttoned-up shirts or fine gauge knits. Slim-fitting trousers which capitalise on the ever-important skinny leg are teamed with masculine footwear such as the brogue or the loafer and slipper shapes which have emerged more recently.

This smarter trend really supports a general shift to more formal dressing which is influencing both mens' and womenswear as we see cleaner, sharper and more minimal silhouettes impacting apparel.

As designers return to neon this spring/summer season, we begin to notice a directional combination of classic neutral palettes injected with splices of bright neon for a modern update on traditional styling. Fluoro shades of pink, orange, turquoise and yellows all possess a level of intensity that ranges from super bright to saturated shades, while remaining shockingly vibrant when styled against blocked neutrals.

First appearing on the spring/summer 2011 catwalks, the unexpected palette was spotted at Giles, Jil Sanders and Dries Van Noten and featured in blocked panels, minimal flashes and ombre effects.

It was no surprise that it was also a key shade for some of the stylish attendees at London, Paris and Milan fashion week. We saw this shade worked into knits for a relaxed feel while keeping it classic when layered over a camel trench. We also love the revamped cable knit with stitches painted over with fluoro paint for a personalised edge. For a smarter take on this trend, opt for slate grey tailored trousers and fur jacket to balance out a neon top and contrasting shoes.

First seen on the spring/summer catwalks, designers such as Celine and Jean Paul Gaultier focused on all white looks and casual styling with clean-cut, uncomplicated silhouettes.

The approaching festival season signals the appearance of fashion-forward waterproof and protective clothing for both men and women, giving a sportswear twist to summer festival dressing. Waist-cinching Obi belts were first spotted on the catwalks in October last year. Since then, the high street has released many different interpretations. With a vast array of styling oppurtunities, catwalk designers and high street stores have styled these wrap-around belts over many types of apparel, including outerwear, evening dresses and daywear.

With the approach of high summer’s warmer weather, WGSN have noted a womenswear trend for knotted shirt styling at stores around the world.

Transitional layering sees shirts left unbuttoned over t-shirts and tank tops but loosely knotted at the waist, while other blouses are styled into new belly-baring crop-top options.

This styling direction is worked on a variety of shirt and blouse options that key into some of the season’s leading trends. Check and gingham versions work a flirty 1950’s rockabilly look, floral and denim options channel a romantic festival style and boxy safari-style utility shirts are feminised with cinched in waists. Knotted shirts are teamed with cropped jeans or this season’s midi-length skirts with an emphasis on the waist.

As the online/offline battle continues within the current shopping landscape, one of the most basic retail rules to emerge for retailers is the need to be convenient. A necessity for both online and brick and mortar stores, retailers need to step back and focus on their offer.

As m-commerce and the online world continues to be THE most important retail strategy of the moment, ensuring that the human side of customer service remains is all too easy to forget; customers site free shipping, liberal returns policies and loyalty perks as the top three satisfaction strategies.

For apps and web experiences, function continues to win over fun, so be sure to develop convenient one click check-outs, zoom functionality and the availability to browse product through multi-views. Free online shipping and extended next day delivery trading hours are responses we have seen Us department Macy’s and UK mid-market chain Next recently unveil. And don't forget Facebook which still stands as a relatively untapped territory for retail revenue. Online is now the new convenience store.

But what about bricks and mortar? Well this means being useful, offering a convenient shopping environment that gives product space and the shopper room to breathe.

A great trend WGSN has tracked is the emergence of white box retailing. Seen at Zara’s Rome flagship and Topshop’s Edited collection in London, white box retailing lets the product do the talking. WGSN particularly loves Topshop’s great Edited initiative which has seen the top floor of the store used as an edited boutique, making shopping for the season’s key items a breeze.

Take reference from WGSN’s A/W 11/12 macro trend Your Space for inspiration which explores the idea that we want to minimise and categorise our immediate space in order to cope with the information overload of the 21st Century. And be assured that the white box trend has longevity, as here at WGSN we see it as a believable example of androgynous retail. River Island re-launches 60's brand Chelsea Girl

With the appetite for vintage clothing increasing, River Island has relaunched its Sixties incarnation Chelsea Girl recreating the sixties and seventies clothing sold in the original stores in a 40 piece spring/summer capsule collection. Originally Lewis Separates, Chelsea Girl evolved into River Island in 1988.

For the last 15 months River Island buyers have been tasked with trawling the web and searching the odd attic to track down the original garments. Lucy Moller, the collection designer, bought vintage Chelsea Girl samples from Ebay as well as archive Chelsea Girl fabric and prints to create the new collection.

The brand re-launched on Thursday (24th March 2011) with a pop-up store in Selfridges, Oxford Street and will be residing there for the next 15 days before it is rolled out to 30 stores nationwide. The full collection will also be available online.

To celebrate the launch of this collection, River Island will be handing out promotional keys and inviting customers to try their luck to see if they hold the key that unlocks a wardrobe filled with Chelsea Girl goodies.

Relaxed feminine styling dominates Spirit Awards

The day before the Oscars, all the celebs in town, what better way to spend the afternoon than on Santa Monica beachfront for the Film Independent Spirit Awards.

Accordingly, a more casual approach to red carpet dressing was seen - and we were fortunate enough to get a first hand look courtesy of premium watch and jewellery brand Piaget, one of the event sponsors.

Proving award ceremony style doesn't have to mean formal gowns, stars took heed of the mid-afternoon timing and ditched restrictive eveningwear in favour of lightweight fabrics, floaty styles and laidback femininity.

Prints were the order of the day. Leopard print was favoured by Rosario Dawson and Zoe Saldana, who both wore Dolce & Gabbana; florals were seen on Anne Heche in a maxi-length D&G; and Eva Mendes wore a diffused abstract number from Chanel's spring/summer 2011 collection.

Intricate lacework was also key, as seen in a series of white numbers on the likes of Mia Wasikowska in Rodarte For Opening Ceremony and Jennifer Lawrence in Dolce & Gabbana.

It was a heavily-pregnant Natalie Portman, who picked up best actress for her role in Black Swan, however, who was the star of the day. She wore a short beige silk chiffon and pleated cotton poplin number from Givenchy, offset with acid yellow lace and a matching silk satin belt.

This flirty feminine styling carried over to the sponsor tent of Piaget where an intricate garden party scene, coordinating with the brand's latest collection, welcomed the industry.

Opting for more sophisticated looks in comparison, were veteran award attendees Nicole Kidman and Uma Thurman. Kidman wore a bodycon knee-length style from L'Wren Scott in red lace, while Thurman was similar in white Dolce & Gabbana.

18-year-old Cara Delevingne (sister of It-Girl/model Poppy) is currently signed to Storm Models and just scored a starring role in Burberry’s spring/summer 2011 campaign. The ad - shot by Mario Testino - sees Cara joined by Jacob Young on Brighton beach.

However, modelling is not the young Delevingne’s only talent. Currently a drama student and aspiring actress, (which comes as no surprise- her godmother is Joan Collins) she was narrowly beaten by Mia Wasikowska to the role of Alice in Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland last year.

Clinique Kiss It Better campaign

Clinique hosted a Kiss It Better breakfast event yesterday, held at the Institute of Child Health in London. Now in its fourth year running, the Kiss It Better appeal for Great Ormond Street Hospital Children’s Charity helps to raise money to fund research into the causes and treatment of childhood cancer.

Co-founder of Kiss It Better and ex-beauty editor Carmel Allen talked about the inspiration behind the appeal after her daughter Josephine was treated at the hospital for neuroblastoma, a rare form of cancer. “The premise was really simple, Kiss It Better is something every parent says and does when their child is sick or injured. I wanted to turn Josephine’s experience into something positive and to help make a difference to the lives of children with cancer everywhere,” said Allen.

This year Clinique has teamed up with department store House of Fraser to launch a special limited-edition product, to help raise money for the appeal. The Smoothie Kisses Lip Gloss Set comprises of Clinique’s latest lip product, Vitamin C Lip Smoothie Antioxidant Lip Colour, which features four colours: Pink Me Up, Goodness Grapecious, Nude-tricious and Mango-thon - contained in a brightly coloured pink bag.

The product will be available throughout the month of February, exclusively at House of Fraser, with £4 going to the Kiss It Better appeal (£2 from Clinique and £2 from House of Fraser). A £2 donation will also apply to all Clinique lipstick or lipgloss sold at House of Fraser. This year’s appeal will go towards the cost of funding, training and employment of clinical research nurses who will enlist children onto clinical trials.

Clinique has also partnered up with London born illustrator, designer and writer Daisy de Villeneuve to create an exclusive trio of illustrations for the appeal. The limited run of illustrations retails at £100, with each set signed by the artist. One hundred per cent of the sale of the Kiss It Better by Daisy de Villeneuve prints will go to the appeal.

Key autumn/winter 2011/12 womenswear trends at Who’s Next, Paris

During my recent time in Paris reporting from Who’s Next, a number of key colourways started to come to the fore for the upcoming winter season.

Orange and tangerine tones continue on from spring/summer 11 into the winter season adding warmth to the overall palette. Hot orange creates a dramatic look for block colour, while print-patterns favour orange as a background colour teaming it with black or navy for a striking, hardened contrast or citrus lemon and lime for a splash of colour.

Summer yellow tones are developed and deepened into mature Dijon hues with dresses and tops becoming key items for this colourway offering a colour burst to an outfit. It was also noted as a simple highlight colour in accessories. Mustard tones are particularly noted for casualwear and party items in luxe silks and velvets.

Cornflower blue hues prevail for autumn/winter 20011/12 product, favoured for dresses and outerwear. Colour-blocked panels introduce the colourway in a softer-style for the more faint-hearted customer, while a head-to-toe look can be created when teamed with indigo-dyed jeans, which is a key look on the denim stands at the show.

Grey hues, from dove through to slate, are noted in jersey marls for treggings and sweat-shirt tops, both with added detailing to dress up the casual fabrication. Outerwear sees grey and white flecks mixed together for a tweed-influenced look.

Continuing the trend for low-fi merchandising, the Melissa flagship store in São Paulo has covered its entire façade with brightly coloured post-it notes. The project is called the ‘Melissa Time Code’ and pays homage to all the previous looks the store has had. Over the next few months Melissa will continue to work in partnership with Post It/3M to produce five different window displays which will each show for 15 days. The idea is to view the Post-It notes as pixels, therefore merging low-fi stationery with the contemporary concept of digital media.

New season nautical

Winter sales continue to dominate Paris stores this month. Small quantities of new season stock begin to drop into store, predominantly at high-end retailers while glimpses are also noted at mid-market level.

Predictably for this time of the year, nautical is noted as a key trans-seasonal trend sitting well across all age markets. The traditional navy and white colour palette remains the core focus while the introduction of accents of red and royal blue look fresh.

A mish-mash of Breton stripe proportions and pirate-esque head scarves at Sonia Rykiel illustrated a fun and youthful approach to styling for nautical looks.

The 35+ market opted for a more tailored silhouette with striped SB blazers noted teamed with wide leg white trousers for a more Riviera take on the trend. The fit and flare silhouette continues with placement block and irregular stripes updating the typical Breton proportions.

Hollister's new Fifth Avenue store, New York

While out looking at New York’s new season retail offerings I came across the new EPIC Hollister store on Fifth Avenue. It’s the second EPIC flagship in New York after the brand opened its impressive four floor store in SoHo back in July 2009. The new store opened at the tail end of 2010 and features an impressive facade made up of 179 flat-screen TVs displaying a live video feed from Huntingdon Beach in front of real-life wave pools. The theme continues instore with more screens broadcasting the same footage, working alongside the brands signature dark lighting and distinct aftershave aroma in a bid to bring the SoCal lifestyle to NYC. The screens and video footage confirm WGSN’s Jpeg Gen macro trend, while also marking the emergence of what’s expected to be a hugely popular VM trend for 2011 and onwards.

So the Golden Globes took place in a sultry Beverly Hills (80 degrees, in January?!) on Sunday night, the first major awards show of the season.

The red carpet was teeming with A-list celebrities from film and television - from Brangelina and Johnny Depp to the Glee and Mad Men cast and even Justin Bieber - with red carpet reporters facing a tough night trying to interview them all.

All eyes were on Natalie Portman and her growing baby bump, which she obligingly showcased in a pale pink, draped silk Viktor & Rolf strapless gown with glittering red rose corsage, while Angelina Jolie looked so perfect she was almost otherworldly... statuesque and regal in a long-sleeved, emerald green sparkling column by Atelier Versace. In fact, long sleeves were popular with several stars, including soon-to-be Oscars host Anne Hathaway in offbeat cinnamon-toned paillette and crystal Armani Privé and Leighton Meester in nude beige Burberry Prorsum with delicate sun-dappled print. Both unusual looks for the red carpet, but all the better for it.

We also loved Michele Williams’ super-cute daisy-scattered Valentino dress, Scarlett Johansson’s gorgeous pale apricot Elie Saab gown with floral appliqué; and Jayma Mays’ 20s-style black beaded tulle Alberta Ferretti gown with deep V-neckline.

But overall, our two key trends were Modern minimalist - as seen on Claire Danes and Emma Stone in almost- neon Calvin Klein Collection; Nicole Kidman in cream one-shoulder Prada and Tilda Swinton in Jil Sander - and Cinderella styling – best seen on Olivia Wilde in chocolate brown Marchesa, Jennifer Lawrence in high-low-hem Louis Vuitton and Helena Bonham-Carter in suitably eccentric Vivienne Westwood (with mis-matched shoes no less).

Bold colour was also popular: with vivid red, pink, emerald green, midnight blue and pewter all seen, as well as the usual nude beige and black ensembles; while details-wise: sleeves, one-shoulder necklines, high-low hems and sequinned or crystal-scattered embellishment were key.

Spring/summer 2011 nail colour trends

The WGSN beauty team have been trying out all the latest new nail colours that are set to hit beauty counters this spring/summer.

There are three key nail colour trends coming through strongly. Many cosmetic houses are focusing on a bright pastel candy-coloured palette, with nail polishes arriving in shades of mint green, sorbet lemon yellow and pale baby blue.

The second biggest colour trend sees brands offering tropical colours. Hot vivid tones of orchid pink, tomato red, tangerine orange, parrot green and ocean blue are key.

Lastly, nude nails will be a big trend this spring/summer. Maybelline New York and Nails Inc will launch a collection of nude shades, which consists of taupe and nude grey tones.

3D technology and tablets prevail at CES

WGSN has just returned from the International Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas, where we tracked three overriding technology trends.

As 3D further infiltrates technology, the demand for comfort and consumer satisfaction was high on the agenda. Brands such as Toshiba have developed a 'glasses-free' experience marking a move forward. The scope for 3D is also broadening as manufacturers look to incorporate the technology on portable devices such as laptops, phones and cameras.

The tablet was a core product story at the show, with many brands continuing to develop rivals to Apple's iPad that launched last year. Manufacturers are concentrating on developing an uncompromised internet experience with further connectivity. The Blackberry Playbook is set to launch in the US in Q1, with HD cameras along with being able to synchronize with the Blackberry phone.

Finally, the home continues to make use of the web as brands develop products with the use of the internet on a broader scale. Home appliances, like LG's smart refrigerator with THINQ technology, have now been developed with internet connectivity.

Southern hemisphere summer highlights

Our recent What’s in Store report from Melbourne highlights summer styles which are already enjoying success in Australia, and which we expect to traverse into the northern hemisphere summer season.

The 70s-style maxi dress works with the warm climate in loose, sleeveless shapes. Washed pastels and floral prints define a bohemian print direction. Watch out for these floaty pieces also working into romantic, pastoral trend styling.

We also note a safari influence with a khaki colour palette permeating a variety of products. Multi-pocket blouses and dresses with flap detailing offer true safari styles. Alongside these appear softer alternatives in lightweight cottons and silks for a more feminine safari feel.

Here in tradeshows, we’ve just completed our extensive (and exhaustive) seasonal round-up for spring/summer 2011. So what key colours and shapes should you be looking out for in the spring? It’s a question we get asked constantly, so here’s a sneak preview of the season ahead.

For womenswear, two colour stories that stand out are hot orange and cosmetic nudes. It’s a move away from last season’s faded pastels and neon highlights, looking altogether more sophisticated. Combine the two for an even edgier look.
Soft resort shorts were seen across the board for women, with paper-bag tie waists and feminine bow detailing. Keep prints geometric and abstracted for a watery, arty feel.

Over in menswear, focus on true blue (encompassing royal blue, Yves Klein blue and navy) and tobacco hues – which hit on the overarching workwear trend for summer.
The retro baseball jacket emerged as a key item for men – excellent for the youth/street market and touching on summer’s sportswear vibe.

Aesop retox at Merci, Paris

A brand and a concept store that we seem to bang on about a lot here at WGSN are Aesop and Merci - among many other things, what we love about them are their innovative VM stories, which never fail to inspire.

While the rest of Paris gears up for sale season, it's nice to see that Merci doesn't fall victim to the red and white signage, instead, it has combined forces with Aesop for this lovely VM-come-art installation inside the store's Orangerie.

A cascading wave of Aesop cardboard boxes, designed by Australian architect and long-time Aesop collaborator Rodney Eggleston, crawls up the wall and ceiling, repeating a VM trick employed by the brand in many of its stores - innovatively reusing packaging for display.

A detox beauty bar and specialist Aesop tea will be available throughout January too, helping to ease shoppers out of the cold snap. See you there.

Rough textures and vintage finishes dominate mannequins at NADI

Textured effects and antique finishes are coming to the fore at this year’s NADI, the annual tradeshow for the VM industry. WGSN’s New York retail editor Ann Larsson spotted several key brands playing with vintage themes, including tea-stained canvas fabrications, distressed details and retro 40s styling.

We’re loving the rough, clay-like texture at Christina Taylor – sitting perfectly with WGSN’s ongoing matt black trend. Our tip: focus on hard, raw materials, such as cement, and give extra texture by filing and sandpaper effects.

MAC spring/summer 2011 make-up trends

WGSN beauty team attended the MAC spring/summer 2011 trends day last week, where the MAC team presented the key spring/summer make-up looks from the catwalk. ]

Head of make-up artistry Terry Barber referenced four beauty tribes: Neo-boho, Nude, Neo-classic and Quirky Colour.

Nude is all about looking naturally beautiful, focusing on primer and concealer products to create a flawless base. Neo-boho is inspired by the strong 70s look on the catwalk. It’s about looking bronzed and sun-kissed, with lots of conditioning products applied on the eyes and lips. Neo-Classic focuses on statement and perfectly painted red lips, strong groomed brows and a smoky metallic eye. Finally, Quirky Colour is based on an Art Deco colour palette in chalky finishes.

MAC also named four key trends: Pop Classic, Ice-Dreams, Raw-fined and Terra-Copper. Make-up artists are exploring the idea of juxtaposition: a vivid basquiat bold lip on a stripped-back skin (Pop Classic); pastel colours applied in an avant-garde manner (Ice-Dreams); a stripped back minimalist face to counter a complex fashion collection (Raw-Fined); and exploring the contrast between light and shade in a tan-toned palette (Terra-Copper). MAC revealed that this season’s make-up is about experimenting with different textures and making brave and bold statements.

For the fashion addicted - especially the shoe passionatas - of which I can count at least four of the senior exec at WGSN - the first day of Barneys Fall 10 Sale was a confirmation of the sea change in fashion tone in this city.

While Marc Jacobs still rules the UK and Asian luxury markets as the go-to-brand for chic, modern style, it was the Asian Americans - Philip Lim and Alexander Wang who were dominant.

Barneys buying perspective has always been spare and modern - with a few over the top colour and print specialists to give the shop floors lift and the customers who like a little more bling something to buy - but although the marc by Marc Jacobs area was beautifully merchandised, for the first time it felt more brand than... well let's say fashion brand.

Where Wang, Lim and at a lower price point ALC and Ian manage their fashion cred by showing the wares on a simple rail, the Marc range tipped towards Hilfigerism.

Cos have tapped into the Wang sensibility in the European market at a mass level and it sells beautifully, but European luxury markets still hanker for colour, detail and vintage influences.

New York has the opposite story. New York aspirational mass brands keep running vintage and authentic stories. For them, given the traction Wang has in accessories as well as top and mid-level apparel must mean the next shift is surely back to minimalism...

Ralph Lauren unveils 4-D digital masterpiece

Ralph Lauren promised a 4-D spectacle, a sensory experience and the “ultimate collision of fashion, art and technology” to celebrate its 10 years of digital innovation in the US and the launch of its new e-commerce site in the UK, and boy did it deliver.

Using a technique known as architectural mapping it superimposed a light show onto the facade of its New Bond Street and Madison Avenue stores in London and New York respectively last night, made possible by the 3-D replicas projected over them.

Balancing a video camera in one hand, my iPhone to take stills in the other I was one among a huge crowd stood on a closed-off section of New Bond Street.

Once you realise the technical work that’s behind this, you can’t help but be inspired by all the tricks it made seem possible - the buildings first looked as though they were being rebuilt block by block before the front burst open and a series of four-storey high models emerged in 3-D form seemingly walking along a catwalk towards us.

A gigantic handbag spun 360 degrees, a leather belt wrapped itself around the middle of the entire block and a series of colourful neckties swung from the rooftop.

The brand's iconic polo players charged mid-game back and forth towards one another, and even Ralph Lauren himself waved from a top window.

The 4-D element of the show arrived when four spinning fragrance bottles emitted real perfume into the air, while the sensory experience was further emphasised by an accompanying soundtrack that pulsated along the street.

Save from explaining anymore, however, you’d do better to watch for yourself:

"This is the biggest idea that we’ve come to yet," I heard David Lauren, senior vice-president of advertising, marketing and corporate communications, say earlier the same day at the International Herald Tribune Heritage Luxury Conference.

"This is not about screens, this is not about stores, this is not about ads - this is about taking technology to the air. This is about reinventing the way in which we look at fashion, technology, art, architecture; the way in which we look at retail; the way in which we look at branding. It will never be the same again."

He referred to the event as a large-scale art installation and referenced illusionist David Copperfield as well as elements from James Cameron's box office hit Avatar as real-life possibilities thanks to this new technology. "It happens right before your eyes with no glasses, no wires, no screens... it’s an amazing thing."

For all his commitment and enthusiasm about the new spectacular, he gave the plaudits to his father, now 70, who made a crucial decision 10 years ago: “When the design team said that luxury products should not be online, it was my father who said: ‘No way. This is my future.’”

Although the event was restricted to London and New York, the aim is to push it virally with video footage of both the show and behind the scenes posted online and through the brand's mobile applications.

The launch of the new "digital flagship" in the UK is the brand's first e-commerce venture outside the US. RalphLauren.com currently has a turnover of $200m a year, and plans are in place to open this further still with an Italy site slated for spring 2011, and Asia thereafter.

The shorts trend just goes on... and on

Years ago, shorts were what you wore on vacation and (if you were a boy) couldn't wait to get out of. Ignoring the hot pants trend of the early 70s for just a while, men were the first people in recent history to go mad for shorts and women have joined in with equal enthusiasm. Our What's In store reports consistently show shorts beign pushed to the forefront of window displays.

Shorts are everywhere. Like the mini skirt and jeans, they've transcended mere fashion to become a wardrobe staple that can be worn (almost anywhere) and - even more significantly - all year round.

It's happening worldwide. Japan's Fuji Rock festival was virtually a celebration of shorts, espeially in denim as our report shows. The US loves shorts too and the country's highest-rated sitcom (Two And A Half Men) is led by Charlie Sheen's character who's as famous for his shorts as anything else.

Shorts on women are big on main streets at the moment and this is crucial to the wider success of an item that was once a summer staple only. Interpreted in wool knit and paired with some thick hosiery, shorts are as practical for cold days as for hot and great for slightly older shoppers who might not want to show as much flesh as the summer variety requires. Not that summer doesn't have its fair share of shorts. Our Key Item Analysis report shows shorts remain a hot item for Spring/Summer 2011. Resort shorts, bloomer shorts, layered shorts and more should continue to get cash registers ringing well into 2011.

Jeremiah Goodman at Acne

There are lots of reasons to visit a new Acne store- not least the new collection- but the use of Jeremiah Goodman’s interiors illustrations in the brand’s new flagship on London’s Dover Street in Mayfair makes it unmissable.

Acne has a knack of creating casual cool luxe effortlessly. In London the use of floor to ceiling Goodman canvases just adds a touch of lush nostalgia to a space that otherwise stays true to its former gallery roots.

For those who don’t know the name Jeremiah Goodman, he’s one of the world’s most interesting illustrators of interiors. Even if you don’t recognise the name you will immediately recognise the work. We won’t be at all surprised if we see some imitations / homages springing up as a result of this latest outing with the Swedish brand.

Vintage resortwear inspiration from Horrockses Fashions

London's Fashion & Textile Museum put us in a Mad Men frame of mind this morning, with its beautiful exhibition of '40s and '50s dresses from the archive of Horrockses Fashions. Although the North of England-based ready-to-wear line ceased production in the early '80s, we urge you to visit this exhibition which is full of contemporary design relevance.

Ideal for print and resortwear research, Horrockses’ bread and butter were their flirty cotton summer dresses, pretty swimsuits and Betty Draper-style full-skirted gowns. Unfortunately there are no plans as yet for a re-release of the label's signature printed dresses, but Horrockses innovative shape, print and fabric combinations make it much sought-after label on the vintage market.

Spring/summer 2011

Emerging trends from Bread & Butter, Berlin for womenswear include romantic looks that have a wonderland-like feel with a mix of crochet, sheer, lace and soft fabrications. Washed out jersey and draped sweats are updated with floral prints and embellished with lace charms giving a fantasy feel.

Chambray shows a strong presence in womenswear spanning across dresses, trousers and outerwear. Blue chambray is still key, but its a return to the traditional grey colourway that is the key update.

A soft palette of ice cream pastels, with colours ranging from mint, lilac, mango and pastel pink. Key for washed out jersey and sweats, but looking newest for trousers and jacket shapes.

For menswear, vintage continues to be strong with dusted and scuffed leathers creating an aged and love worn appearance. Glossy buttons are purposely chipped and indigo yarns are used in shirting and jersey deliberately faded for an over-washed style.

The desert combat trouser emerges as a key item updated with a skinny leg silhouette with the dropped crotch chino is also noted with designers encouraging light coloured bottom weights.

Seersucker comes to the fore for men’s casualwear seen for shirting, and tailored shorts. The classic blue and white seersucker is replaced with a palette of fashion pastel with orange, blue, pink and mint.

The menswear colour offering also comprises of tonal camels, white taupe and fennel,with global traveller styling looks key with textured fabrics in neutral khaki, mink, greige and creams worn head to toe.

Denim is stripped back and clean silhouettes are key this season, with many brands citing minimal detailing and block colour indigo as a key direction. Authentic denim styles are recreated to offer an understated modern look.

The utility trend continues with brands looking to performance fabrics and functional detailing. Durable surfaces and engineered construction see the outdoor trend evolve in the denim arena.

Hand-sewn and customised looks continue to be a key direction for brands this season. Limited edition ranges of unique pieces use oversized hand-stitching, imperfect patching and soft washes to create a personalised love-worn feel.

Footwear and accessories brands are increasingly telling the story about the heritage of their products. Whether it be the ‘Made in Britain’ range by New Balance or the ‘design your own graphics’ by Shulong. Along with an increased awareness of eco-responsibility brands are finding ways to communicate and connect with their consumers.

More and more sportswear brands are designing dedicated female styles. With narrower lasts and specific details such as sporty high heels, this is becoming and increasingly important market that brands are not ignoring.

Yellow is a key colour in footwear along with fruity brights such as greens, purples and pinks. After a spell of more conservative footwear colours, we are seeing a return to braver colourways.

For print and graphics the trend for native and tribal style continues and works in all-over pattern and placement motifs. Designers are inspired by the mystic animals and geometric patterns of native art, creating new modern versions that have a 90s hip-hop dance wear.

Graphic interpretations of stripes and checks are key in many collections. Un-even, painterly and conversational stripe motifs create new interest in the wardrobe staple.

Illustration is still a big trend, especially in monotone black on white. Detailed, skilled linear illustrations, often of animals crop up across the show. The trend for white tees also continues this season, with many brands still continuing the stripped back, basics aesthetic.
